Baby's first haircut is an auspicious occasion for Hindus. This first haircut is called Mundan. Mundan happens during the first or 3rd year of life of the baby. Friends and family come to bless the child on Mundan Ceremony.

Hindus believe that the hair from birth is associated with unwanted traits from past lives. Thus completely removing the hair (clean shave) frees the child from the past. The rite is performed as a special ceremony in most homes, for young girls and boys.

The tradition is to shave off the head completely, though sometimes a clump of hair is left. Since shaving off can be very hard on baby''s delicate skin, turmeric and sandalwood paste is often applied to the head to soothe the skin.

In addition Mundan also has a medical benefit: completely shaving off the hair stimulates the cells and improves blood circulation to the brain thus giving the child a long, healthy life.
